Ambergris Caye is Belize’s biggest island and hot tourist destination. TripAdvisor named it Best Island in the World two years in a row (2013 & 2014), it was named destination on the rise and now best wedding location for 2014 by Destination Weddings & Honeymoons.

Why am I not surprised? Ambergris Caye is the number 1 tourist destination in Belize for many reasons. Its natural island charm and friendly people is probably the main reason but there are many other qualities that make La Isla Bonita the Paradise it is known to be like its close proximity to the Barrier Reef. Only a 5 – 10 minute boat ride takes you to the Barrier Reef and some of the best dive & snorkeling spots in the country.  It is home to the well know Shark/Ray Alley where you can feed and swim with nurse sharks, turtles, sting rays, and spotted eagle rays.  Hol-Chan is also another protected marine reserve right on the reef and there you can swim with schools of fish in their natural habitat.

It is also super easy to hop in a boat or plane and head to the mainland for inland excursions like cave tubing, zip lining, and Mayan Ruin adventures.  At the end of the day, you can get back to keep enjoying the island’s offerings. Both airlines offer continuous flights to and from the mainland that make it super easy for you.

If you are a food lover then you will not be disappointed.  There are many restaurants to choose from whether you are on a budget or if you are looking for a more gourmet dining experience.  However, to be honest, I personally believe that all restaurants in the island are worth every dollar you spend on the dish of your choice. These restaurants offer high quality food for the rate they charge.

Ambergris Caye also has some of the best resorts capable of hosting your destination wedding on the beach.  There are so many to choose from so the defining factor will be left to what you are looking for. There are different types of accommodation, whether luxurious or rustic but all beautiful and face the aquamarine waters of the Caribbean.

Ambergris Caye is the biggest and busiest Island in Belize and while it has seen great development over the years, it has still managed to keep its relaxed laidback atmosphere and still has its tranquil spots where you can relax and soak up some of the tropical sun.  While the beach is public, you can still find a quiet piece waiting for you.
